I gave into temptation and actually Subscribed to Big Finish. (download because it's cheaper)

I'm...not sure if I'm sorry or not about this.

Just crawled back onto my blog after hiding for a while -- I hope you are enjoying and have not regretted the choice. :)

I used to ship Nyssa/Tegan by default, and always feel slightly guilty about the fact that I slipped over to the Het Side of the Force (much to the annoyance of a couple DW friends on Tumblr, I think).

It was Fifthx's fantastical portrayal of Five, plus the fact that Big Finish has been doing such good things with the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa for years whereas they haven't been as consistent with Tegan. Some of those writers come suspiciously close to shipping them. Peter also helps by putting his most emotional work into scenes where the Doctor's worried about Nyssa. If you've got Emerald Tiger handy, pop in Part 2 Track 1 and scoot forward around 2:15. The minute that followed is one of my favourite scenes of all of Big Finish. :) )

As for the freebies, yes, I always make sure to pick my free gift -- I don't think you can add it later, and it means getting a few more audios! I've picked up Return to the Web Planet, An Earthly Child, and a bunch of others that way.

You made the right choice (I assume, though I haven't heard that one yet). Most Big Finish audios are available for individual purchase, even if they were originally subscription bonuses from years past (for a while, there was a bonus CD each year if you subscribed). But two of them are only available if you subscribe to the year when they came out OR you choose them as your subscription bonus.

One is The Four Doctors. The other is the Five Companions.

It's a simple, innocent audio; Nyssa still sounds more like a girl than a young woman in that one, and the Doctor's shielding her eyes from the birds and the bees.

It's sweet. A stripped-down cast as is common for the one hour audios, with just four guest characters and really only two for most of it. Not the greatest story in the world, but Nyssa befriends a butterfly-girl about her own age who's a bit of a kindred spirit, while the Doctor finds a kindred spirit in the girl's father, and they have a minor adventure with the Zarbi running amok.

It's basically an excuse to revisit that fascinating environment -- the FX, sets and costumes weren't up to it, but of course with BF you can just imagine it, and it's got great visual imagery.

It reminds me a little of the bird-people story in Circular Time "Spring," except that there's no annoying voices. But similar in that part of the fun is just the imaginative and unusual setting, giving Nyssa and Five a chance to be space tourists and scientists.

I love it. It's light fluff, the Big Finish equivalent of a ficbit, but it's one of those I reach for when I need a Nyssa audio that's not depressing. ;)
