But in English, thank Yetaxa.

First, something serious.

Come on, Baby, Be My Tiger, a great essay on the many (three! why are there three??) versions of The Indian Tomb. It touches on the films' placement in German film history and orientalism/fetishisation/racism. A good read, recommended.

EDIT: Did you know, a lot of Germans thought Eschnapur was a real place?

And now, the silly.

Lost Media (TM) nowadays is all about stupid meat apps and American game shows. But the real lost media is all the Connie fan fiction hosted on the old Conrad Veidt Society website! From 1998! It predates the earliest known fic by over 10 years! (There are earlier Casablanca fics from the early 2000s, but, ya know, his character...)

One even seems to be FP1 fic! (The other is RPF?? I think??) No idea who the authors are, and appears no other fics were added.

Thought these were interesting. All in German. Had to use translators.

Lili Veidt travells to Europe in search of books and plays to be adapted to film. Very interesting. Would like to know if something came of it.

Conrad Veidt being an overly cautious papa.

The Midnight Bell

Back in September 2021, J and I went to the Cheltenham Everyman for the premiere of Sir Matthew Bourne's New Adventures 'The Midnight Bell'.  It was my chance to go to something which was entirely new, and something I'd probably never get the opportunity to do again.  And I really enjoyed it.

This summer the production is being revived and yet again, to great excitement on my part, the first performance was in Cheltenham.  I booked tickets as soon as booking opened, and got excellent stalls seats.

As I said when I originally reviewed this piece, it's very much Sir Matthew Bourne does fan fiction.  The Midnight Bell is based on a pub and the characters from six of Patrick Hamilton's books: the trilogy 'Twenty Thousand Streets under the Sky', 'Hangover Square', 'The Slaves of Solitude' and 'The Gorse Trilogy'.  I had read the books prior to going the first time, and knowing their stories does help a bit with the characters, but it isn't essential.  The dancers and the set were excellent and the music fits in perfectly.

As for the fanfic - take ten characters from different books, put them in the same venue, but use dance instead of written words.  For three of the couples keep to canon pairing, for one couple take characters from two different books who have never met, and finally add two original characters.

Because it was the first performance, Sir Matthew Bourne was in the audience, sitting three rows directly in front of me.  Sitting next to him was Etta Murfitt, associate artistic director of New Adventures.  As we left after the performance, both were standing in the side aisle.  J said to Sir Matthew that he'd really enjoyed the performance, and then I got to say that it was brilliant, that we'd been at the very first performance and how delighted I was to be able to see it again.  And all without getting totally tongue-tied and spouting rubbish.  Which, as you can imagine, made my evening!

Posted the penultimate chapter of "Congratulations on Your Apotheosis" last night. And it definitely seems to be making people emotional in the right rather than the wrong way, whew!

So close to being done with this now. What am I even going to do with myself after? Well, write my Into a Bar fic, I guess. And, boy, ain't that gonna be a tonal shift, even though half of it is for the same fandom.

[community profile] intoabar assignments are out! I did, in the end, decide that now was finally the time for the poor character I've kept meaning to do for the last several iterations of this and kept bumping for someone newer and shinier: Isaac from The Orville. (Um, metaphorically shinier, that is. Literally, he is very shiny.) If I hadn't picked him, I would have done one of a couple of possible characters from Gravity Falls, that being my current obsession. Instead, I used that as one of my possible second fandoms, which I realized was taking a bit of a risk, because GF, while it has fantastic main characters, also has a lot of minor ones who are basically one-note joke characters, and the thought of having to write some of those didn't appeal much. Aaaannnnd, of course, I ended up with one of those minor joke characters, because the Into a Bar RNG has a heck of a sense of humor. The good news, though, is that it's one I feel like I can actually do something with. Possibly because he's more of a two-note than a one-note character. So, hopefully, this should be good silly fun, even if only for me.

Jersey - Liberation Day

A couple of days ago Daughter and I returned, having been on an organised trip to Jersey (an island in the Channel Islands) to celebrate their 80th anniversary of Liberation Day.

While VE Day (Victory in Europe 1945) is celebrated on 8 May, the Channel Islands weren't liberated until 9 May.  As can be imagined, there are always celebrations on this day, and particularly this year, being the 80th.

Last night I posted chapter 12 of "Congratulations on Your Apotheosis", aka the climax, which I have been very nervous people might be upset by in the wrong way rather than in the right way, but so far I think everyone seems to be the right kind of upset. I mean, they're definitely not going, "oh, ugh, meh" and wandering off, or at least if anyone is, they're politely not telling me so. I think I'll take it as a win!
